One thing you learn pretty quickly here in India is to never trust the menu. I mean, they may have the most beautiful dishes and drinks showing in a fancy menu, but that does not necessarily mean they will really have those items...
A couple months ago a beer-café opened it's doors near our favorite shopping mall. As an avid beer drinker my dear husband was very excited about this. His excitement was unfortunately short lived; of all the exotic beers mentioned in the menu they only had about 25%. And those were the standard beers you can also get everywhere else! The waiter was very helpful pointing out which beers they DID have, because from the massive list that was faster then telling which they didn't!
Another example; my favorite restaurant for lunch in Bangalore is a French bistro kind of place. They make a wonderful banana-choco-milkshake which you can finish only if you are really hungry.
It has happend to me more than once that the waiter would come back to inform me that they couldn't make the milkshake due to a lack of bananas... Bananas!!! We're in the freaking tropics!!! They sell bananas on every street corner!!! I just cannot understand why you would rather say no to a customer than send someone to just go and buy some bananas!!!
So, when eating out in India it is always the safest bet to have a backup dish (or two... or three) because you never know what they ran out of today...
